Text Prediction for Translators

The TransType project at l'Université de Montréal aims at building a new kind of interactive tool for translators. The basic idea is to observe a translator at work and repeatedly propose extensions to the translation being typed, which can be incorporated into the text whenever desired. Our current prototype is a word-completion system based on statistical models of language and translation which is capable of correctly predicting about 70% of the characters in a typical translation. In this talk I will describe how the system works and discuss some recent research into improved statistical models.
