(photo apeared in the Computer Networks and ISDN Systems, vol. 14, no.1, 1987) Piotr Dembinski received the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Warsaw, Poland, in 1966 and 1971, respectively. From 1966 to 1971 he was with the Institute of Mathematics of the Warsaw University. Since 1971 he has been with the Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw. In 1989 he became the Deputy Director for Research of the Institute and in 1996 its Director. The academic year 1974/75 P. Dembinski spent at the University of California, Los Angeles as a Visiting Scholar under the Senior Fulbright-Hays Program, and in 1984/85 he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science of the Chalmers University of Technology and University of Goteborg, Sweden. From 1985 to 1988 he was working within the framework of the European Project ESPRIT/ SEDOS I and II, first in the Agence de l'Informatique, Paris, then in the Division of Distributed System Architecture and Standards of BULL S.A., Louveciennes, France. His research area included semantics of computer languages, verification of programs and concurrent systems. He is an author of several papers in these domains and co-author of two books on semantics of programming languages. His current work concerns methods and software tools supporting the design and validation of communication protocols and distributed systems.
